Hey, stuff happens -- a snagged or tangled reef line or some other issue while raising or lowering the sail. I like to have drifting room to sort things out if the unexpected happens. IMHO, that's just good seamanship.
Two years ago I was in an anchorage when some yahoo in a beater sailboat boat tried to anchor from being under sail, and his sails didn't drop when expected (the halyard was tangled and couldn't run free). He fell off and smashed broadside into a power boat at about 5 knots . The damage was pretty significant -- (that damaged boat must have been worth at least $500k) and the damage was probably more $ than the beater was worth. The offender in the sailboat wasn't insured either.
IMHO anyone who hot-dogs in a tight anchorage or mooring field is an idiot. And to add to that; GOBI lives on every boat at least from time to time. I have no special respect for those who do this, even when they do it well.
