In the case of the Aegian, your last words about the "first night" were proven.

I'm not sure I'd put that off to sea sickness. I've had situations where myself and one other was sea sick offshore. Maybe after two or three days, I might be too tired to stay on watch...but not the first night.

I repeat, they were motoring on autopilot because there wasn't much wind. Insensitively maybe, I think the sad explanation is more "Forest Gump" than "Doctor Kildaire" :^))) [It's Friday, I can't help myself.]
