I'm not sure it really was a "dead" drop -- like the strap snapped completely.

If you think about it, you drop of a big wave and "shiver your timbers" -- sometimes the wave is more than 5 or 6'. When that happens, you don't really have the equivelent to a dead drop onto concreate -- BUT it's pretty shocking too.
