as it also provides a point for troubleshooting... if you really want to get rid of it, consider a mil spec circular type connector. You can get these with rubber seals that will close around the cable and they will lock to each other and provide a fair seal. To make the ultimate seal, you cover the entire connection with rubber sealing tape and coat with scotchkote. I did this in the Navy on connections that were exposed to sea air and I found I could slice the rubber tape off years later and find a perfect connector.

You will need to know how many wires need to connect, and order a connector and seals for a few connections more (spare pins). The whole connection set up can run up to about $200 including the connectors, seals and tape and scotchkote. You can order through someplace like Mouser or Newark or Digi-key.

You may need someone to install this for you if you are not versed in using these connectors, but once installed, they are pretty robust and are easy to mate and unmate year after year.
