Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

I read an interesting comment recently

From cruisers in Northern Europe who noted that you don't need the same dinghy size and range that you would typically want say in the Caribbean. Even cruising in Maine in recent summers I can't think of many instances where we have wanted to go so far in the dink that the Torqeedo wouldn't be adequate (granted, at slower speed). My notes are at work but I think you have a pretty decent range with the Torqeedo, and it would be easy to keep the battery topped up regularly (edit: I have plenty of solar power. Without it I probably would not be considering the Torqeedo for live aboard cruising)

Larry's comments about no ethanol in Europe are accurate and you're correct, I should probably consider a gas outboard. I'll have to decide all this next year, as I still have an old Suzuki 6 that I will take out of storage and try this summer. I am selling my 4 stroke Mercury (a heavy SOB) and if the Suzuki runs well this summer I might just go with that for Europe. Still, I like the simplicity and cleanness of the electric outboard.
