Dad; wide-eyed "wtf?"
Son; "Aw come on Dad, the traditionalists lambasted your B40, "too fat", "that boat is suicide!". In fact, traditionalists pasted most of your boats."
Dad; "They were sailing stodgy Concordias and I was kicking their asses, that's why they were mad. (grin)"
Dad; "So why 50 feet long?"
Son; "That's just the "sweetspot" today for Hinckley to make a few bucks. 50 is the new 40. All new boats are bigger today than 50 years ago"
Dad; "Why is it so expensive?"
Son; "Aw come on Dad, your $32k B40 wasn't exactly a Ford Falcon($1,999.00) in 1960. And your B40 had two batteries and 8 switches, my boats have a mechanical complexity that doubles the cost-up front- of your simple boat, let alone the increased overall costs of building a boat today." "On the other hand, did you notice my B50 doesn't weigh much more than your B40? (both Dad and Son "grin", lighter which is faster, is also cheaper to build)
Dad; But why is it so wide!? Why 2 wheels? Why is there so much space below? Why don't you shave that beard?
Son; Well Dad, things have changed,...50 years of sailboat design between the B40 and B50, was driven by; 1-"Speed-we're still designing boats to compete, just like your B40." These boats sail differently, flatter, faster, bumpier,...noisier,....
2 Sail Handling-"huge changes have been made here in faster more easily handled sail systems. That alone has driven much of boat design both in actual use and added complexity. And in the end, we still have to pay attention to the market so Hinckley has a boat that will sell, just like you did with your B40, 50 years ago."
3 Son; "Facial hair is in, again, Dad."
Dad; takes another look at the B-50,,"..but,...but,...wtf.....?" gets angry,....
Son; "Don't worry Dad,... in 50 years, the "traditionalists" and old salts will love my B-50."

The Hinckley Bermuda 50 is a modern auxiliary sloop that captures today’s sailing spirit in both looks and performance. At the same time it embraces the breathtaking lines that have made Hinckley yachts the benchmark for beauty for decades. Designed to be competitive in club racing or in offshore competition under IRC and ORA rules, the B-50 will excel in a broad range of events from regatta race weeks to the Bermuda Race.
Utilizing modern materials, high tech construction techniques and the latest in sail handling systems, this versatile sloop can be comfortably handled by a couple, but will also easily accommodate a family, or another two couples for safe, luxurious, performance cruising. With a hydraulic lifting keel the B-50 will access shallow anchorages from the Chesapeake to the Bahamas, and will sail swiftly from harbor to harbor even on challenging offshore passages.
The B-50 is a modern-day evolution of clean lines with unmistakable Hinckley elegance. This is the Hinckley that will define dual purpose sailing for generations to come, in much the same way as its predecessor, the Bermuda 40 did when it first came to life more than a half century ago.
