You can't beat it for that. A locker is cheaper to build than a chest of drawers,
In Response To: Open space is cheap. ()

a shelf is cheaper than a locker with door, it goes on and on in boat production. A quarterberth can be a money saver over a cockpit locker.

I too shelved one of my hanging lockers, Al. I fit two shelves that house 6 large tool boxes slid in sideways and held by high fiddles(these come out often). I still had enough space for hooks and hanging forward of the shelves.

There's another hanging locker forward of it that I left open. Alden built in shelves in the deep recess outboard under the deckn in that second locker. Plus they finished it with mahogany ceiling strips. Add a well finished panel door with rails and stiles, and a hanging locker can get pretty expensive, but still cheaper than a set of drawers. Labor was cheaper in 1960.

In the end, Hinckley is a semi custom builder so the CAD layout below has probably had little thought. That the buyer can get some custom work below will just help sell the boat. "Bigger galley, sure, we can do that,..."

I miss the old 2D plans of boats, especially for the layiout below, they say much more to me, the reality of the space, than these cartoon like renderings.
