By both accounts, it seems clear that the rudders were damaged when the wave strike drove the boat backwards... You really don't think that the fact that the rudders were "locked hard over to port" might not have increased their vulnerability to the bending of one shaft, and the separation of the rudder from the shaft of the other, when the boat was forced backwards against them?
