We use ours all the time, I really like it ...
In Response To: AIS..how important? ()

... I see what you're saying about at night and fog. Ours is a SIMRAD AS60, a step above the bottom feeders. I like the color display. We go back & forth over the Gulf Stream a couple times/year, that's when it comes in handy, although it is on when making longer runs in the Bahamas. I like knowing where the other big boats & ships are. A few years ago, a well-known cursing couple on their 45' or so boat collided with a power boat somewhere in the Bahamas, I think somewhere in the Exumas, maybe it was somewhere near Nassau, but where ever it was, I believe it was just offshore. Just after lunchtime, in the middle of the day, both were on the same Rhumb line in opposite directions. Don't ask me how that happened in the middle of the day, but it did. I don't think anyone was hurt but there was quite a bit of damage. I don't think that would have happened with AIS running on either boat, not to mention both. As you note, we really like this when we're traveling at night, which we are always doing. Cheers, John
