That happened once to us! We survived, ears are the best device then. Truth is when we get caught in fog, we're usually in an area of known traffic, mostly small boats that AIS wouldn't help with.

Off Portland or Boston at night, I've never felt in danger but it would be nice to know anything about the tankers in the area. But that's too rare an event for me to install a separate instrument.
