Even for a day sail. We cross the channel from Dana Point to Catalina where there's a ship channel. An AIS will pick up a ship at 20 miles. That makes it easy to alter your course to get good clearance before you even see it. It's not fun hearing big ship engines and not being able to see it because of fog. Hell, even in clear weather as those things travel fast.
