I wasn't surprised to see it on network tv news, last night(that's lost all sense of journalism for me). It's become a sensationalized parenting issue based more on what the mom posted in her blog or on social media, facebook.
Despite warnings not to, some people write in their blogs or facebook(or forums!), as if they were writing with a pencil in their personal private diary, with a lock on it. That's fine for blogs and facebook in general because they don't get that much notice outside of some followeres.
But when something bad happens(like this), and you become a media focus, then all that -off the cuff- stuff you wrote, is treated like court-room testimony by the media. They'll take a sensational line, or two, and use it as the lede in the 'news' story. Some schlock news will make those few lines the entire story!
Using these now sensationalized lines for these purposes, doesn't seem like journalism to me.
