I guess this could be abstracted more loosely to say "The situation makes the man".

I wasn't there so I won't defend Eric but I'm thinking he made a tough choice. From Charlottes blog, she wasn't having a good time and perhaps she gave him an ultimatum. Just conjecture on my part, but if the Admiral ain't happy....
