Tartan

Dan,

It's a 1976 Tartan T.O.C.K. That stands for Tartan Offshore Cruising Ketch. It's based on the design of Yankee (also by Sparkman and Stevens) that Irving Johnson sailed. They only built 30 hulls between 75 and 76. I know it's a boat a lot of people would not find visually pleasing as it has a lot of freeboard and the cockpit is so far forward. The things others wouldn't like about it are what draws me to it. I've had a lot of boats over the years, most were traditional, aft cockpit designs. I've always liked boats built to a purpose with utility taking precedence over aesthetics. The boat is heavy, safe, roomy and has lots of deck space. It rides well in a seaway and gives you the feeling of great strength of construction. Those were qualities I wanted. I always go by the old saying that "if you don't look back at her a couple of times every time you leave, you've got the wrong boat".
