I just wanted to ensure that the shock cord is NOT the main connection... 
In Response To: Gene, first of all I like the idea of covering the cord like Cole suggests ()
between the rode and the boat. It sounds as if it is a secondary parallel connection... so the rode is still there, if the shock cord somehow fails.
So in my mind, I see it as the picture below, with the shock cord taking up the tension and leaving the rode in a loop... until the painter is pulled and the shock cord is stretched.

- I have an 11lb Claw Bruce type / Lewmar … Overkill for sure, however ...
That angle of pull is a bit high, eh?
