But seems to me that a key to turn on the engine should be down near the nav station/power panel. All I need outside are warning lamps/buzzers, tach and start and stop.

Of course if someone really wanted to steal the darn boat, all they would have to do is untie it and sail it away. And I suspect a strong well placed kick would get you right through the hatch boards.
