in the days of deadeyes and lanyards. Rotten cotton. Sails used mainly in light winds -- the highest sails on the square riggers -- would be made of old sailcloth so that if the vessel was caught in a sudden squall, the sails or their sheets would blow and the rig wold not be overloaded.
