Not the same today in the print magazine world, as those haydays.
This was brought up on Sailnet. The thing that was mentioned most: The only boating magazine that is well liked by many - from those that still subscribe to any - is Good Old Boat. GOB has huge loyalty and it is primarily boat work. Wooden boat is popular too. Both more expensive, so price isn't the issue with reader loyalty.
On that thread, I was most interested in the difference between the two cover shots. Black had two different eyes going. One was a far off shot with a longer lens that squeezed the Mt. Dessert background and the Morris togther. The other looked like it was taken closer with a shorter lens and the Morris was prominent. I could see his shoot boat flying in and out of different ranges.
So, wouldn't you think, they're two images in a series Black shot? Curious how they would end up with the similar(same for the cover) shots from the photographer.
Other than that, how the images were manipulated and adjusted is interesting, side by side, one looks over done-contrasty, too much saturation - the other more modestly manipulated but maybe not as much of an eye grabber.
Go to the second page, Jon E pasted the two cover photos.
