I've seen several of my photos published in two competing magazines in the same month. The photo editors didn't want to pay for an assignment, they wanted me to shoot on spec. My response was sure, but if you want exclusive on a given shot or shots you pay my rates (based off Getty rates) and not the typical rates for the given magazine. I would put ~200 shots on a hidden web page for the photo editors to make their selections from and if they didn't want to pay exclusive rates it could be sold to many mags. Sure enough the mags would pick the same handful of shots then attempt to be pissed at me when they showed up in multiple places even though they knew my ground rules going in. Being cheap makes magazines look stupid. Time and Newsweek learned their lesson with that Boss photo. Most magazines never learn.
