I was struck by how much time was spent fixing electronics

It was an interesting read and highlighted a huge change in recreational sailboats over the last twenty years- heavy reliance on electronics. Even if the electronics had all worked, it would have failed them by not warning of the path of the storm. Also I am sure that it was a distraction and took away time that could have been spent on other critical boat items like the prop shaft leakage and deck penetration leaks.

I am sure that the Purdy's would have kept going if they could have dealt with the water. The sails, rigging, steering- the basics of the boat was all working fine. But today there is another basic- the electronics.

I sure won't accuse that crew of being neophyte cruisers who are slavish to electronics and couldn't get out of their slip without them. But the story had elements of that issue.
