choice. Teak would have. One boat builder suggest a few alternatives for this project(he agreed the teak is too costly for him to use on his own boat). At this point I might be able to put my hands on an alternative(another hardwood that I can't remember but also below $10/ bd ft. vs $30 for teak). These alternative woods are much more workable and forgiving than Ipe.
My local supplier had access to Ipe in good stock. I needed one more piece to finish and it was in Rockport the day after I called for it. That's the main reason I went with it. With all the horror stories I read, I've been pleasantly surprised with the Ipe. I think the hardness and stability will be a plus in this application. Time will tell though if it was the right choice.
