The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a crew of five people after their sailboat capsized and sank about 200 miles south of Point Loma. The group was taking part in the Baja Ha Ha sailing trip.
The Captain says she believes a whale hit the boat and caused it to take on water. She says it sank within seven minutes. The crew was able to climb into a lifeboat and call for help.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter from the San Diego station and a C-130 plane from Sacramento. The Coast Guard says the boat was hard to spot in the choppy seas, but it was able to make the rescue.
One person suffered a minor injury. The Coast Guard says the crew did everything correctly, including making sure they had an emergency beacon and a flare gun.
I suspect that Latitude 38 will have more coverage soon. http://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/lectronicday.lasso?date=2009-10-28&dayid=343
