I worry that sailing is so quiet that they don't sense us. I'm not saying that would have saved the boat in this case, just my tactic to try to avoid a collision with humpbacks. We lost count of the number of whales we encountered in July in the Pacific off Vancouver Island including a pair side by side coming 20 ft. from us and diving under us and surfacing just a few yards away. Awesome and a little scary.
