Would you rather run aground on a South Pacific reef at night with a Kevlar hull, or a steel or aluminum boat?

My guess is that a steel or aluminum boat would have survived such navigational negligence as befell Jean and John Silverwood on their Kevlar hulled Lagoon 55...just a guess though. Materials engineering specifications for both materials, and vessel scantlings would provide more accurate information.

Here's the story of their grounding, holing and shredding, and subsequent disaster: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/features/20051218-9999-lz1c18wreck.html

This is not to imply that one buys a boat to run it up onto a reef --but clearly unexpected shit does happen, as it did to the Silverwoods, despite lots of experience and preparation. Of course, most people are more lucky and do not run aground.
