... as it rusts it expands, and this leads to expansion cracks and breakage of the concrete in which it is embedded. Couple that expansion with movement, and you have a handy "block breaker."

So in reality it is perhaps the worst thing to use as a tie-down for a mooring.

Around here, engine blocks are the recommended anchor for moorings... coupled with regular inspections to ensure that shackles remain intact.
