Never tried it, but the idea of crank-starting anything more than a one cylinder diesel has always scared me...

I'd have to be pretty desperate to try it with my 30 HP, seems you'd have about a millisecond before the engine caught to get whatever you're using to spin it off of the crankshaft pulley before it could cause some serious damage... I'll bet there have been plenty of injuries due to a spinning crank handle that was not removed in the nick of time...

Better to simply carry a spare starter, and carefully monitor your battery status, IMHO... And, perhaps a small Honda generator as a back-up, seems a better investment than one of those very expensive backup hydraulic starters like those from Lucas...
