unfortunately new diesels don't have very heavy flywheels. The old ones did. Now there is not much inertia to keep the thing spinning until you close the lever.

it still can be handy to open these levers up. If you store a diesel for long, cranking it with the levers open will inject fuel oil in the cylinder and help lube the top end before starting.
