The "toilet" was just a plank with a hole in it that didn't need any rinsing....Sea water did eliminate the need for any TP, but it wasn't a pleasant rinse 'cuz most of the oceans of the world are COLD, and salt in your shorts isn't any fun either!

However, only the crew had to endure such hardships...The captain's toilet was a "water closet" in his cabin in the stern of the ship...direct drop into the sea...rinsed by a bucket of sea water kept on hand by the cabin boy.
