I highly recommend the Monitor exhibit

() at the Mariners Museum, Newport News. The turret and other original parts of the Monitor are in pickling tanks for preservation.
Unfortunately, you can't get to the museum by water . . . best bet is to pull into Hampton, VA, and cab it or take a rental car.
