Forget doing anything except replacing them. Don't waste your time. If your 26 year old chainplates aren't cracked now, they will be at any moment.
We're replacing the chainplates on our Gulfstar. I sent in a diagram of one of the chainplates to Garhauer. They quoted me $85.00 a piece.
3/8" thick, 22" long & 2.5" wide out of 304 Stainless and mirror polished. For that price it isn't worth it to do anything except for replacing them.
Photo was taken on the Colombian island of San Andres a few months ago. We broke a chainplate and had a guy in town make us a couple of new ones for more than Garhauer wants.
