You forget the ease of reefing/balancing by dropping the main.

IMHO ketches can make a lot of sense for offshore cruising work but not much at all for the average sailor except to have more rig to play with. And in light airs you got two masts to hang nylon from instead of just one.

- There are both. Something you don't hear is, 2 spars are expensive to build.
- On my yawl, the mizzen is the first sail set and the last struck...
