We still hear these from boats under sail in the fog.

We've used kids yelling on the bow. Their ears are better too, sailing in the fog.

An anachronism for most boats today but Hamilton Marine in Maine still sells them.

Ketch rigged boats, advantages?
Great advantage for sail makers ;^)
I know a guy with a ketch, and hardly ever uses, his main.
Since I know Todd and Tom (and I don't that many people) -- I stand corrected about the number
That's ok Steve. My favorite is, "If you don't step your mizzen this year, you'll sail faster",.....
Are you trying to start a bun fight...
You forget the ease of reefing/balancing by dropping the main.
Ketch rigs
There are both. Something you don't hear is, 2 spars are expensive to build.
On my yawl, the mizzen is the first sail set and the last struck...
Having sailed a ketch for 15 years...
And
2 masts
Since you mentioned it, I like the mizzen to lean against at the helm.
And it's a great place to mount your bell.
Terrible place for a bell
I don't know where else to put it Jim.
I only use it to get the crews attention.
What is the requirement for a bell?
Bell
Under 20 meters is when I really want someone to know I'm there.
Me too Westie. We do use ours sailing in fog occasionally.
Leeward mark duty.
Colregs sound signals
OK that was what I thought...

I thought that those were for Moose season
I hear you loud and clear...
