Being a design builder most of my life, I've seen corded tools disappear. First ever so slowly, then in a great wash throughout the industry. Not only is there no compatability between manufacturers, there's little between any tools anyone owns. Voltages changed annually, more tools became battery operated, new technologies like lithium replaced an entire history of outdated batteries and tools. Literally zillions of them in just a couple decades. And these batteries are very expensive and have become their own industry and market.
Now on a large construction site, tool "suitcases" are everywhere. That's the deal that gets you everything plus a radio, table lamp or cordless blender thrown in. And now of course, the entire building site is a web of cords run to various charging stations festooned with appliances, radios, and countless batteries cooking at all times.
Home Depot and the like went even further and tapped the home owner weekend construction warriors. Most of them have more tools than I own.
