As I understand,,,, the reason the units can't be repaired is that the components become outdated and are no longer available. Electronics change quickly these days. A new or better way with new features goes into production to keep the company's products on the cutting edge and compete with new features other company's have. The problem stems from not being able to keep circuit boards or other electronic parts in stock. It would be impossible to keep a boatload of backups for every piece of equipment for 10 years or more. The only thing they can do is to give you a good offer on current products.
I think Raymarine does a good job of that.
If an electronics company has parts for a 10 year old product it generally means that they don't come out with new stuff very often and the internal pieces of their new equipment is old technology. It's a bitch but that's the way it is in the fast moving electronics industry. No other way around it except for something not to break down. An electronics company can't be held responsible if they design and purchase good quality components and a small internal piece fails, it happens.
I was pissed a few years ago when a piece of electronics failed from a very good company and the company didn't have replacement parts. Now that I understand the reason it makes sense. That company was Icom.
