I would love to know what percentage of units get returned for repair or replacment. Seems to me that Xantrax and Raymarine would be way, way up there. Both of the issues you describe should not have happened. Especially in any unit that can effectively end your life (steering on an incorrect course would be that in my book. Also, because you work for an Airline you can easily move to where you can get to have it serviced much easier. Try getting it serviced down island! In addition; I'm hard pressed to see that an item one year old is really "old technology". Seems to me auto manufactures tried this route and the gov actually made them keep and supply parts for 7 years. Won't bet on that one but I remember one of the shops telling me such. Imagine that Auto companies did the same thing. Me thinks you wouldn't be quite so happy.
