I think Irene did more damage soundside and inland than on the Outer Banks

It's not only ocean exposure. Anyone that lives near a bay, river or stream is vulnerable to flooding from the rains. In urban areas you can't even see those streams. And while we did not have strong winds inland from this one, there are trees down from NC to Vermont and 5.5 million people without power. It's sobering to think of the damage if Irene had been stronger.
