Makes you consider how things were in the days before the canal. Going "outside" was an even tougher patch of water. I'm very appreciative of having the use of it.
I had just come overnight from Penobscot Bay and had timed the tide to go through the next day. Another obstacle I've found in the Cape Cod bay which can be tough in a growing southwesterly. The Cape has wind, for sure.
After a CG boarding and safety check outside(fun), I entered an hour and a half before HT at Sandwich, a bit after noon. The current was against me until beyond the Bourne bridge. But the Southwesterly was really beginning to pipe up.
When I hit the wind dead on not far from Onset, despite not being full flow (I'm used to hitting 10 kt+ in several previous passages), it was a sight to behold!
I can only say, I'm glad I didn't hit it at the full flow of the ebb. Wind against current in a narrow waterway, I never take that lightly.
