If you're coming down from Montauk, I'd be tempted to stay well offshore all the way to the Chesapeake entrance. In anything from the east, that entire coast is a lee shore with, as noted above, few real havens. And if the wind goes south or southwest, it's real bumpity bumpity because the depth near shore isn't very much. Stay offshore, but watch for shipping. A straight line is the shortest distance . . . What do you need? 48 hours of decent forecast?
