We are lazing along (Wed afternoon) in a moderate SE'ly just N of Atlantic City. Had a bit of a sleigh ride S of Long Island last night, very fast, pretty lumpy 15 - 25 kt from behind. I have been concerned about a strong Northerly forecast for Thursday night; normally it would be perfect for getting down to Norfolk, but when combined with the swells from Katia and the shallow lee shore along that stretch it's a potentially dangerous combination. So we've been looking at our options (made more difficult as always by that little thing called work and schedules which we all have and which can be a dangerous element in decision making if you're not careful). The Delaware River was an option, though I was concerned with the flooding issues.
It looks like we'll head into Cape May in the wee hours, perhaps just after day break on the last of the flood ... Spend a night at South Jersey marina (thanks Jon for the reco) and then take off early Friday and head outside for Norfolk. Winds will be considerably reduced, and even if we have to motor the latter part of it, I think the girls are ready for some R&R ashore. Come to think of it I could use a bit myself, and none of us has seen much of Cape May before.
I've copied some of the latest comments on Cape May, thanks again for all the great feedback.
