Probably just me, but if I found myself going blind, but wanted to keep sailing by myself for as long as humanly possible, I think I'd try to keep my big trap shut about it... (grin)
I'd be willing to bet that the CG would have let him be, were it not for the fact that they knew beforehand that he was legally blind...
