First off Torqeedo motors aren't cheap. A 1003 with the 520 watt-hour battery will set you back at least $1,900 and a spare battery costs about $660. The lower power output model 503 costs at least $1,600. The price of a Torqeedo is more than double the cost of a 2.5-3.5 hp gas motor. Also, these motors will not push a typical inflatable up onto plane. At least my 1003 won't push my rib-lite 310 with one person aboard onto plane. Top speed on flat water is 4.5-4.8 knots. Range is also a consideration. When fully charged, my 1003 with the 520 watt-hr battery will push my dinghy 8-9 miles at 3-3.5 knots on a charge. If you need more range than that your options are to carry a spare battery or to go with a gas or propane outboard.
So, the Torqeedo is a good choice for a person that doesn't want to go fast, doesn't need to go more than a few miles between charges and is able to pay more than $1,600 for a low hp motor.
Disclaimer - I have a Torqeedo 1003S with two bateries (one 400 watt-hr and one 520 watt-hr). The motor and spare battery cost a bit over $2,100 when I bought them. The Torqeedo replaced a Mercury 4hp 4 stroke motor that ethanol-gas more or less killed.
