You don't have to consume upgrades though Gene.

My daughter just returned home from college still working on her 2006 standard macbook. I'm still happy with mine(we bought 3 white 1100. macbooks together) Our sons would be the real test, he's brutal on stuff, but his was stolen! She'll be a senior next year and may graduate with that laptop. I'm doing quite a lot of "business" on mine as well as CAD design work. I'm still using a 2001 Garmin chartplotter on the boat, it's still performing what I bought it for. All this stuff is lightyears behind the upgrades as you mention. I have a friend who just replaced his radar. He said it had a problem but admits, he wants to be able to interface with his upgraded AP, and upgraded GPS, as he drove off in his, 2012 car that replaced his 2010.
