That's my philosophy too, I was surprise how far I stuffed my bow over the dock a week ago.

I never trust reverse, but I needed it to complete a tight turn inside docks to bring the starboard mid deck(my prop walks preference) softly into a tie off. I came in as slowly as I could with an opposing wind and current and steerage enough.

Problem was, when I levered reverse, there was none(mussels and growth from a few late season weeks sitting). So despite going in slowly, at 45 degrees, and a stout young man fending off, I rode the spoon bow 12" up onto the dock. I'm glad I didn't have a plumb bow.
