We broke our prop shaft in Stuart (while waiting between the two bridges, AHHH!). Hinckley was the only yard able to haul us because of the draft. I decided that since I was replacing the shaft that I'd get a dripless. Starzinger switched from a PYI to a Lasdrop on Hawk feeling it was a better piece of equipment without any servicing at all except for a good look at it once in a while. Hinckley wanted to put in a PYI but after doing my own research I wanted the Lasdrop. To be honest to the yard, they said they had never put in a Lasdrop but had put in countless PYI's. I felt a part is a part and after they put in the new dripless I started having trouble. It seems that the guy that put it in didn't use the alignment piece of plastic that is put on the end of the shaft to flare the seal and keep it from folding over on itself during instillation. Yup, they folded the rubber seal. I brought it back to them twice and we both thought it was fixed but no. It slung a spray of water throughout 2 months in the Abacos and on up to Annapolis where I had the boat pulled out of the water and the shaft removed.
Port Annapolis Marina had installed many Lasdrops and after I was sent me a new seal (free), Port A installed it. Don't know if it still leaked as Bernie sold the boat for me but I was billed $2,200.00 from Port A to fix it again.
Can't really blame Hinckley too much as I should have had them install what they know but a yard shouldn't only be able to install what they know. Hope the new owner is happy.
