We were overpowered with less than a mile to go in this race among cruisers. Not optimum heel but going fast, maybe could have eased the traveler, possibly climbing up to do that in the photo. We never sail with the cap rail or even the rub rail in the water.
A few days after this photo, I ran the small bilge pump for the usual spurt or two. This time it kept running and running for about 5 minutes. Huh? What's this about? A yard had convinced me that an anti siphon loop high in an outboard starboard locker would do fine for the big emergency bilge pump. Nope. Not when heeled that far. I may try a check valve. The back pressure could be a problem. Fortunately we didn't have a problem on the trip down the coast prior to this discovery. Why do I listen to a yard when it goes against my gut feeling?
