Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

With the smallest reefer I've seen, they pretty much make it without running their engine to charge.

They also have one good sized solar panel which also needs to be set-up, after opening their bimini. In today's world, they are minimalist cruisers.

I wouldn't even call them cruisers, more ocean racers, between races- for a few years. Iain is a top notch dinghy racer of some repute. Fiona grew up sailing and has the 'yachtsmen' background(a UK term for-'grew up sailing'). Both crewed on ocean races in the cold waters in their neighborhood, for many years. Both can sail a boat!

They stick to a rigid budget, only anchor(except in rare instances). Buy bulk non-perishable food(little room for cold storage). Meager(in US comparison) electronics, mostly redundant tablets-laptops(a few large back-up paper charts), look for onshore wifi for communications. It's all smart finances though. They own two properties in the UK which are both rented and supply their income, and secure their future.

Their achiles heel(in my opinion), is repair beyond their abilities. They pay for that(which they can because of their smart finances), but it affects the bottom line, and their ability to continue.

More than likely(not certain), they'll call it quits after this coming Northeast sailing season. They may store the boat up here with a spring return and crossing to the UK. Or they, may go deeper into the Caribbean and SA.

At any rate, we're looking forward to some sailing in company with them this August. Come to think of it, they look at it as racing against us.
