I don't fault them for the rescue, nor the trip. Perhaps taking a one year old was a bit ambitious.
What chaps my hide is the way the local branch of the family and the local news is playing this up as a "foolish trip."
A local family of four; husband, wife, 3 year old and 1 year old took off on a "round the world" cruise... youngest member became sick with salmonella poisoning after their 36 foot boat was some 900 miles off the Mexico coast on the "puddle jump" route.
They are not newbie sailors, but have cruised the sea of cortez in the past.
But local media is harping about this as "foolish venture." (see "the whole thing is nuts" link above) What say you?
