Does the engine run well other than that?

When my father re-powered with a Yanmar he found that it would slow down if you didn't hold the throttle in place. The mechanic told him the cable didn't have enough friction and installed a clamp on the cable that could be adjusted to provide the appropriate amount of friction to hold the throttle in place. If this is a new problem on an older engine it may be because something has loosened up in the linkage.
