If the mast was already in the water

() the antenna wouldn't do much good. If he couldn't bring it aboard under the circumstances, then he wouldn't be able to recover the antenna either. I think a coat hanger or stripped wire inserted to the rear PL258 center conductor of the VHF would make a serviceable emergency antenna, but maybe he didn't know that.
