I decided to replace the primary electric bilge pump this week. What should have been a relatively minor job, two bolts and two wires, became a bit more involved. When I went to wire the perfectly functioning float switch I found the original wire was non-tinned. The copper wire was so rotten it couldn't even be exposed with regular strippers without tearing. I know this is an old complaint. Rule has finally been shamed into spending a few extra cents per unit and is now suppling tinned wire pigtails on it's bilge pumps and float switches. Several years ago a friend wrote a letter to Practical Sailor addressing the problem. He had previously contacted Rule. Someone there tried to feed him a line that the talc powder you find in the wire, possibly a manufacturing byproduct, provided superior protection to tinning. How can a company be so irresponsible and shameless?
